چکیده

The activity of collections of synchronizing neurons can be represented by weakly coupled nonlinear phase oscillators satisfying Kuramoto’s equations. In this article, we build such neural-oscillator models, partly based on neurophysiological evidence, to represent approximately the learning behavior predicted and confirmed in three experiments by well-known stochastic learning models of behavioral stimulus–response theory. We use three Kuramoto oscillators tomodel a continuum of responses, andwe provide detailed numerical simulations and analysis of the three-oscillator Kuramoto problem, including an analysis of the stability points for different coupling conditions. We show that the oscillator simulation data are well-matched to the behavioral data of the three experiments. © 2012 Elsevier Inc. Kinetic and frequency-domain properties of reflex and conditioned eyelid responses in the rabbit.

Eyelid position and the electromyographic activity of the orbicularis oculi muscle were recorded unilaterally in rabbits during reflex and conditioned blinks. Air-puff-evoked blinks consisted of a fast downward phase followed sometimes by successive downward sags. The reopening phase had a much longer duration and slower peak velocity. Onset latency, maximum amplitude, peak velocity, and rise t...

In vitro appetitive classical conditioning of the feeding response in the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis.

In vitro appetitive classical conditioning of the feeding response in the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis. J. Neurophysiol. 78: 2351-2362, 1997. An in vitro preparation was developed that allowed electrophysiological analysis of appetitive conditioning of feeding in the model molluscan system, Lymnaea. The network generating the feeding motor program (fictive feeding) is well characterized at the ...

Phase-Amplitude Descriptions of Neural Oscillator Models

Phase oscillators are a common starting point for the reduced description of many single neuron models that exhibit a strongly attracting limit cycle. The framework for analysing such models in response to weak perturbations is now particularly well advanced, and has allowed for the development of a theory of weakly connected neural networks. However, the strong-attraction assumption may well n...

On the Phase Reduction and Response Dynamics of Neural Oscillator Populations

We undertake a probabilistic analysis of the response of repetitively firing neural populations to simple pulselike stimuli. Recalling and extending results from the literature, we compute phase response curves (PRCs) valid near bifurcations to periodic firing for Hindmarsh-Rose, Hodgkin-Huxley, FitzHugh-Nagumo, and Morris-Lecar models, encompassing the four generic (codimension one) bifurcatio...

A Comparative Review of Selection Models in Longitudinal Continuous Response Data with Dropout

Missing values occur in studies of various disciplines such as social sciences, medicine, and economics. The missing mechanism in these studies should be investigated more carefully. In this article, some models, proposed in the literature on longitudinal data with dropout are reviewed and compared. In an applied example it is shown that the selection model of Hausman and Wise (1979, Econometri...
